Celia Hume
Originally from Shropshire, batik artist Celia Hume has always been inspired by colour and the natural world. With a background in art history, fine art, and visual design, she spent years teaching and working as an illustrator before discovering batik during lockdown—a turning point that led her to develop a unique, contemporary style focused on portraiture.
Celia’s work has been recognised by several major institutions, including The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Society of Women Artists, The Royal Cambrian Academy, and ING Discerning Eye.
In 2021, after many visits to Anglesey, Celia made the island her home. Her
commitment to learning Welsh and creating a language group in Benllech reflects her dedication to becoming part of the local community. These connections have deepened her appreciation of the Welsh language as a living thread in the fabric of island life.
From this sense of belonging, the Pobl Môn portrait project was born—a celebration of Anglesey’s people. Each portrait is paired with an audio interview recorded by her friend and collaborator Ieuan Williams, offering a window into the sitter’s life and story.
Drawing on her roots in textile design, Celia also incorporates patterns and imagery inspired by the island’s landscapes into each work.
The exhibition features a wide range of individuals—from a centenarian who’s lived in the same cottage all her life to a scientist who analysed moon rocks. A suggestions wall invites visitors to nominate future sitters, keeping the project alive and evolving.
